Autolib

With the phenomenal success of the Velib public bicycle system introduced in 2007, Paris has now introduced the car version, Autolib. The set up is similar: you apply for a day, week or year pass at the automatic kiosks around the city, where you will need your drivers license, a valid form of identification (passport or national identity card) and a credit card. During a videoconference with one of their representatives, you identify yourself and chose the subscription you want. (Insurance is included). Your transaction will be validated and the kiosk will print a personal badge, which will give you access to the Autolib service. You can then take out a car at any of the 250 rental stations around the city. Once you are done, you return the car to any of the other stations and connect it to a recharging station.

Best of all, the cars are electric and have no fumes or make any noise. The overall goal is that with 3000 Autolibs on the streets, it will eliminate 22,000 gas-powered cars, meaning less pollution and traffic. A French or international drivers license is required to use the service. The rate for a day card is 10 euros, week card 15 euros, and the yearly card 144 euros. The first 30 minutes ranges from 5 to 7 euros depending on what type of pass you buy, the second 30 minutes ranges 4 to 6 euros, and each additional 30 minutes after that ranges 6 to 8 euros.

Christmas in Paris 2011: Jours de Fetes

One of the most fun things to do during the holidays in Paris is to go to the Jours de Fetes, the indoor carnival and amusement park inside the Grand Palais. I was there early last evening taking photos and I loved the riot of colors of the neon and lights against the muted green iron and the panes of glass with night filtering through them of the Grand Palais. The sounds of the bells and whistles of the games of chance, kids and adults screaming with laughter or fear from the churning rides, and the crying of overtired babies echoed off the massive glass walls and cement floors.

The festivities last till January 2, so don't miss it!

Christmas in Paris 2011: Galeries Lafayette Noël Rock ‘n’ Mode

For Christmas 2011 it's Noël Rock ‘n’ Mode at Galeries Lafayette. The windows are adorned with chicly dressed animated marionettes called Kouklistars and have names such as Cyril Mokaiesh, Mademoiselle K, Inna Modja, Brigitte, and Iman. They have been created by New York artist Andrew Yang and he has also designed the life sized rock n roll mannequins. 

Inside Galeries Lafayette stands the impressive 66 ft. tree dressed with 55 neon rock n roll signs on it.

Legendary rocker Iggy Pop is the poster boy for the Noël Rock ‘n’ Mode on all the metro ads.

Christmas in Paris 2011: Place de la Madeleine

The holiday festivities on Place de la Madeleine are especially yummy this year. The famous gourmet food shops Fauchon and Hediard have their windows decorated with the most sumptuous and decadent holiday foods including caviar, chocolate, Champagne, trees of macarons, and gingerbread men. Hediard has their traditional colors of red and black on all their packaging and Fauchon uses shocking pink to entice the buyer.

I also took a shot of the magical white-branched trees on the elegant passage Village Royal, right off the Place de la Madeleine.

Even more festive are the holiday concerts at the Madeleine church including Vivaldi's Four Seasons on December 13 and December 17 and a New Years eve concert of Mozart's Requiem.

Christmas in Paris 2011: Printemps Noel Reves d'Evasion

This year the Christmas windows at Printemps, titled Noel Reves d'Evasion (Dreams of Escape), is much ado about Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel. Four windows have Chanel backgrounds from Moscow, Los Angeles, Moscow, and Tokyo with clever and imaginative sets and animated dolls. The rest of the windows have animated Kaiser Karl (that's what he is known as in the fashion industry) dolls dressed in his signature look, black suit, high-collared white shirt, dark glasses, and his silver mane pulled into a ponytail plus a few other windows have Chanel collections from former years. I'm not sure kids will identify too much with the Karl dolls, but it would be funny if there was a sudden rush at Toys R Us for Karl dolls.

As you all know I am crazy about Christmas in Paris. Every December I post photos of all the Christmas windows, festivities, and special events. This year I am expanding my love of Christmas to my cooking classes and tours.

Charlotte has devised a spectacular Christmas menu for our December cooking classes. Don't salivate all over your computer when you read it.

We would love for you to join us for the class and will even accompany you in singing Christmas Carols as we cook our holiday feast. Classes are offered Tuesday to Sunday, 9AM to 2PM, with a minimum of two students from December 7 to December 23. The cost is 220 euros per person.

I am also offering special Christmas tours showing you the magical shop windows, gleaming outdoor lights, beautifully decorated trees, and festive Christmas markets. The tour includes visits to Galeries Lafayette, Printemps, the Champs Elysees, gourmet shops Fauchon & Hediard on Place Madeleine, and the rue St. Honoré, with designer shops like Hermes and Lanvin. The tour also includes a mandatory hot chocolate stop.

Tours are 3 hours and are available either 11AM-2PM, or 3PM to 6PM, 7 days a week from December 5 till January 5, excluding Christmas day and New Years day. The cost is 225 euros for up to 3 people, each additional person 75 euros.

Christmas in Paris 2011: Les Sapins de Noel des Créateurs

It's that time of the year again, tis' the season, HO-HO-HO, and all that. As always, I reserve most of December to the magical lights, done-up store windows, and an abundance of trees, all to celebrate the Christmas spirit of Paris.

I am kicking off my Christmas posts pre-maturely today, and will start the rest of my Christmas posts later this week.

Les Sapins de Noel des Créateurs, now in its 16th season, is a collection of original Christmas trees from top French fashion designers, architects, and interior designers . Each year the trees are auctioned off for a good cause and this year proceeds will go to Association pour la Vie-Espoir contre le Cancer (A.V.E.C.), a children's cancer charity. Designers/fashion brands this year include Jean Paul Gaultier, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Sonia Rykiel, Pierre Hermé, Trussardi, Chantal Thomass, and Stella McCartney.

You have to hurry to see the trees because today and tomorrow are the last days.

New! Eye Prefer Paris Cooking Classes
I am happy to announce the launch of Eye Prefer Paris Cooking Classes. Come take an ethnic culinary journey with me and chef and caterer Charlotte Puckette, co-author of the bestseller The Ethnic Paris Cookbook (with Olivia Kiang-Snaije). First we will shop at a Paris green-market for the freshest ingredients and then return to Charlotte's professional kitchen near the Eiffel Tower to cook a three-course lunch. After, we will indulge in the delicious feast we prepared along with hand-selected wines.

Cost: 185 euros per person (about $240)
Time: 9:30AM- 2PM (approximately 4 1/2 hours)
Location: We will meet by a metro station close to the market
Class days: Tuesday,Wednesday, Thursday,Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
Minimum of 2 students, maximum 6 students.

World AIDS Day 2011: Bryan McCormack-Preservation is Life at Centre Pompidou

The Centre Pompidou welcomes the artist Bryan McCormack for an exceptional installation Preservation is Life. Installed on every level of the escalators going up to the galleries,  on the 6th floor the artist offers a spectacular and ephemeral installation in the colors of the rainbow sky, with its central theme, the iconic motif of condoms.

The Centre Pompidou is a partner of AIDS for raising funds 2011. As part of the fight against infection, condoms symbolizes protection (against all other forms of sexually transmitted diseases), but it also evokes the male gender, sexuality, eroticism and talking, by extension, of the birth, the family environment, religion, customs and beliefs ...It is, as such, the ambition of Bryan Mc Cormack to abolish all associations, evocative, symbolic consider it as an "object" beyond its only function.

The intervention of Bryan Mc Cormack is complemented by an environmental sound reinforcing the understanding of the whole.
