Cristobal Balenciaga was one of the greatest couturiers of all time. His brilliant tailoring and masterful draping graced some of the world’s most legendary women. He was the couturiers couturier, praised by Christian Dior- “he was a master for all of us”, Coco Chanel- “ the only authentic couturier, he was able to design, cut, set and sew a dress from beginning to end” and Hubert de Givenchy “He is the architect of haut couture.” Balenciaga also taught fashion design classes and highly influenced Oscar de la Renta, André Courrèges, Emanuel Ungaro, Mila Schön and Hubert de Givenchy.
Spanish born, Balenciaga drew heavily on his country’s folklore, incorporating a semblance of boleros, mantillas, capes, lace and velvet in his collections. The dominance of black in his collections was another important historical element of Spanish fashion.
A new exhibition Balenciaga, L'oeuvre au Noir, celebrates Balenciaga’s legacy of black with over 100 creations pulled from the Palais Galliera collections and the Maison Balenciaga's archives. It includes cocktail dresses, coats, gowns, suits, and coats.
I loved the simplicity of the clothes, the exquisite tailoring and femininity. There’s also a timelessness about the clothes, as they would be just as chic and modern if worn now as when they were first designed in the mid-twentieth century. If you go, look closely at the subtleties of the different shades, textures and fabrics of black.
