You are probably wondering why I’m writing a post about Debbie Reynolds and the photo above.
I first saw Debbie on the big screen in 1964 when I was a wee tot of eight years old. I was transfixed watching her sing , dance, struggle, brawl, drink and in the end, survive the capsizing of The Titanic in The Unsinkable Molly Brown. To this day, it’s my favorite musical performance of all time with the exception of Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl. I pull out the DVD of The Unsinkable Molly Brown every few years, pop it in, and watch Debbie in all her glory, with tears streaming down my cheeks when her husband leaves her.
In the mid 90s Debbie pooled all of her money and opened a small casino in Las Vegas, along with a Hollywood memorabilia museum. Debbie was one of the foremost collectors of Hollywood memorabilia with one of the largest collections in the world. It included one of the three original pairs of the red ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz and the dress Marilyn Monroe wore in the iconic subway-grate scene in “The Seven Year Itch.” A friend of mine and I took a trip to Las Vegas in 1995 and we put Debbie’s casino on the top of the list to visit. It was the time Mega hotels were springing up in Vegas and poor Debbie’s casino seemed puny in size compared to behemoths such as the Mirage or the Luxor. The chips for the gambling tables had Debbie’s image on them and the ultimate kitsch was if you got three images of Debbie in a straight line on the slot machines, you would win the big jackpot.
After playing the slots for a while and failing to produce three Debbies, we headed to the lounge. While sipping on cocktails we discovered Debbie was performing in the cocktail lounge instead of headlining the big room at the hotel. She did her song and storytelling schtick along with her spot on impersonations of other celebrities. After the show was over she totally worked the room and came to every table to personally thank each person for coming to the hotel. When she got to my table I shamelessly gushed about how much I loved her in The Unsinkable Molly Brown. She couldn’t have been more gracious and was happy to oblige me when I asked to have my photo taken with her. I’ve always cherished the photo, the ultimate Las Vegas souvenir.
Debbie, you were one of the last great and brightest movie stars of a bygone era when stars had actual talent. I will truly miss you and hope there’s a special place in heaven for you and Carrie. You both deserve it.
