It was all so secretive. Late Christmas eve around midnight, as I was going to bed, Vincent closed the bedroom door and told me not to come out for at least 45 minutes. It was fine, as I was tired and going right to sleep. The next morning when we woke, he tied a blindfold around my head (a very elegant one at that, a vintage Hermes scarf) and slowly lead me to the living room. He untied the blindfold and there it was: The Gift. It was a light box with an image of me, a still from the scene I was in from Vincent’s film After Louie and next to it was another still from the film, a stunning sunset on the beach in the Hamptons. Vincent special ordered the light box in New York, not sure how he would get it on the plane, and brought it home with him last week.
Vincent’s gifts are always unique and special but this year there was a special resonance to his gift. After Vincent unveiled the light box, we hugged and he said in the most loving way that he couldn’t have made his film without me. Of course I was practically in tears.
The making of the film has been a long journey, almost eight years. There were times when both of us didn’t think it was going to happen, a mere pipe dream rather than a reality. But through hope, will, luck, determination, love, angst, doubt, sweat and tears, After Louie got made. It’s not over yet as Vincent is still in post-production till the end of January and the film will then travel to film festivals in 2017.
In past years you asked what I bought Vincent for Christmas, as I wouldn’t include it in my posts, so this year I decided to tell you. When I was in Milan I bought him a very chic black nylon Prada bracelet with a stainless steel clasp. He loved it. I also bought him a beautiful handmade black suede journal with black paper inside from a shop in Florence.
Christmas dinner was fantastic and the menu of split pea soup, tagliatelle pasta with walnuts and sage, lamb meatballs with pine nuts, Swiss chard and warm yogurt sauce, salad of fennel and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and Buche de Noel from Pain Sucre was beyond delicious. And we barely talked about U.S. politics.
I hope you had a warm and wonderful Christmas and Hanukah holiday too.
