Perched high on the hilltops above the Cote d’Azur, Fondation Maeght is private art foundation founded by Marguerite and Aimé Maeght and dedicated to presenting contemporary art. Inaugurated in 1964 by Andre Malraux, it was built architect Lluis Sert. The idyllic setting has a sculpture garden in the front entrance with works by Calder, Pierre Tal-Coat, Chagall, Takis, and Leger. Another outdoor area is the Miro Labyrinth, a myriad of whimsical animal sculptures and the back courtyard has works by Giacometti.
We loved the current show, a retrospective of somber life sized portraits by artist Djamel Tatah. Some of the most striking portraits are the long multi paneled ones with solid blocks of color surrounding them and the ones with repeated figures. One room has a stained glass panel by Miro and Tatah’s portraits attain a heightened effect with the reflection of the glass on them.
We were hungry for lunch after the museum and lucked out finding le Tilleul, a non-touristy restaurant with an eclectic, modern menu, not just your typical French Provencal dishes.
