A tour client of mine requested a tour of contemporary galleries and I took her to the northern part of the Marais where most of the top galleries are concentrated. I’ve been so busy in the last month or two I haven’t had a chance to see the latest exhibits, so this was a treat for me.
We saw some great work including the tail end of a Louise Bourgeois show at Karsten Greve, but the standout of the tour for my client and myself was the Tony Cragg Accurate Figure show at Thadeus Ropac. Of the fifteen sculptures made of steel, bronze, wood, and stone, four of them in the main gallery were beautifully curated, creating a striking and bold presentation.
What I liked most about the sculptures is the intricacy and layers, along with the sumptuous colors and rich textures. (I was so dying to touch them because they were so tactile). If you look at them from various angles, they look completely different, as you can see in the photos.
Tony Cragg was born in Liverpool, England and now resides and works in Wuppertal Germany. He also has a sculpture park in Wuppertal with revolving shows, which I would love to visit sometime.
Cragg’s primary focus when creating his sculptures is to find new, unprecedented forms that amaze the viewer, which he clearly accomplishes in this show. He views himself as a materialist, constantly seeking new materials to expand his vision, sometimes using geologically layered arrangements. He also uses familiar forms such as totem-like pillars.
