I love to support small businesses and new ventures around the city, especially if they are owned by people I know.
Three Australian girls, two of them sisters, Anna and Stella Rice, and their friend, Rain Laurent (my friend), have joined forces to open the delightful Tuck Shop, a fresh new combination café, coffee bar, and sandwich shop. Tuck Shop is a reference to a canteen in Australia.
Located in the still trendy CanaI St. Martin area, I strolled there the other day (actually I metro’ed ) to have lunch. I saw on their Facebook page the daily soup was tomato with honey and thyme and hightailed it over there before they ran out because it was a cold, blustery must-have soup day. The storefront has a blackboard sign on it and the graphic of the Tuck Shop on the window looked like a nostalgic diner sign. Inside it was one large, open space with a community table with quirky chairs around it. Rain and the sisters were busily doling out soup, brewing coffee, and cutting sandwiches, all of it looking rather fresh and smelling quite delicious.
The lunch menu was still limited to the daily soup and sandwich special. You either get soup and sandwich or sandwich and the daily dessert plus coffee for 9 euros, an absolute bargain for such high quality food. The bowl of soup was quite large and satisfying, the sandwich served on crusty baguette was filled with creamy Feta cheese, baby spinach, and roasted vegetables, and the moist carrot cake was hand iced right before it was served with smooth, cream cheese frosting. Tuck Shop has a custom blend of a Peruvian and Brazilian coffee from the top rated coffee house in Paris, Coutume. All the ingredients are organic and all dishes are meat free, so it’s a godsend for vegetarians who are looking for more than cheese and falafel sandwiches.
Funnily enough I met two other bloggers at the table, my friend Diane Pernet from A Shaded View on Fashion, and a French lifestyle blogger and we were all saying how much we liked the warm, relaxed atmosphere and the excellent, simple food.
Brunch is served on Sundays for only 10 euros and includes a croquet Madame muffin, a slice of banana bread, a hot drink and orange juice.
