When I walked into the Hernan Bas Thirty-six Unknown Poets at Emmanuel Perrotin Gallery, I immediately observed that the portraits were very much like Egon Schiele’s from late 1800s and the gold and silver leaf resembled Klimt paintings from the same era. A few minutes later after being completely dazzled by the portraits, I picked up the brochure about the show and my observations were right on the money, as the brochure said that they were influenced by Egon Schiele and Klimt.
Bas is a young Detroit based painter and the 36 portraits represent cursed poets and are portrayed in contemplative poses with rich, sometimes vegetative backgrounds. He has a fascination for art and literature from the late 1800s.
There is also a series of Japanese style screens, inspired by Vuillard and Bonnard.
